Nokie Edwards Crossover - Review In the music biz, "Crossover" is generally a term used to describe an artist that performs music outside his normal genre, style or classification. However, I guess this is not the meaning for this title. Ever since I have been listening to Nokie Edwards play guitar starting in 1961, he has always impressed me as the most versatile and flexible amongst my favorite group of guitarists to this day. He has an uncanny ability to hear and play almost instantly any melody presented to him. It is this raw inborn talent that propelled him to stardom through the most popular "Ventures" years. Well folks, he keeps on doing just that with incredible ease on this new CD release! You'll hear a smooth styled collection of jazz, rock, country rock and popular songs numbering fifteen - Some I'll admit I've not even heard before. Fabulous tones come from Nokie's custom HitchHiker electric and acoustic guitars and from the talents of a "small stack" of gifted musicians accompanying him as well. Nokie's tasteful use of fuzztone on some numbers will take you back to the early days and memories of the sounds we all loved. Another "3 thumbs up" amongst a seemingly never ending sea of great albums this man has played on and produced. Chet Atkins was a great inspiration to Nokie... This new CD is a great collection of 15 popular songs from what has been the best years of rock and country music. The different period tracks are arranged as a well stirred mixture. Every next song is a surprise and a trip up and down the halls of your memory. It's interesting to note that Nokie has always injected his country music roots in all that he plays... But he does so with such skill that many popular guitarists today have used his licks as the foundation for their own, no matter what style of music they play. This man alone is probably responsible for launching million's of aspiring young guitar players. This album pleasantly reminds me of the days I used to spend all afternoon after school in front of the family stereo record player with my guitar trying to learn to play like Nokie... Dear Nokie & Judy, The new HitchHiker CD of Nokie's is fantastic. Nokie covers all the bases with this one from Jazz to Rock to Country to Easy Listening. The title track HitchHiker could be played on a JAZZ STATION or AN EASY LISTENING STATION, Nokie's ever fluid style is at his vibrant best here. My other favorites are "Sails" and "Good Time Charlie". As I mentioned I play the drums and this album gives me a complete drummers workout moving through the different styles of music. Being a musician myself, I have always loved all styles of music. I have to admit that many of the songs on this CD are memories my father played when I was a boy growing up in the ’50s. This CD is very special to me because it blends the talents of my favorite guitarist, Nokie Edwards, with the finest in Texas Country Swing talent... The Light Crust Doughboys and Tom Brumley.
